Welcome to my first Blog Post!
Ornament Academy is an online polymer clay video tutorial school for all of you who love polymer clay, Christmas ornaments, and crafting. And I want to tell you all about it . First, let me tell you a little about myself.
The Christmas Ornament Lady
Customers at craft shows called me, Maria Maestri, the Christmas Ornament Lady. Making ornaments has been my career for 45 years. Polymer clay for 35 and salt dough for the first 10. Arts and Crafts shows were my main selling outlets. The shows were a fun and profitable experience. I worked with promoters who are are tops in the craft show circuit. Shows and promoters will be discussed in future posts.
Maria Maestri…the Christmas Ornament Lady
Age caught up with me and I had to cut back on the number of shows I did. Yup, old , arthritic hands just don’t work as well as younger ones, so I embraced the internet and started writing PDF tutorials for my designs and Simply Ornaments was born. My Etsy shop is Simply Ornaments and many of you may have purchased tutorials from me. To the right you can see some examples of my past work.
Age, Arthritis and Diseased Corneas
OK, that doesn’t sound pleasant but it’s life. So two years ago I retired from doing shows. The arthritis in my hands got worse and I broke my wrist. The wrist healed but a visit to the eye doctor set me back. He informed me that I had no diabetic damage, my cataracts were too tiny to worry about, but….we all dread that big but. Disease of the corneas. No cure except corneal transplants. The nurse wrote down Fuch’s Dystrophy and I read it wrong. You can imagine what I thought but it is pronounced Fooks.
Polymer Clay Christmas Ornaments…a New Beginning
So, are you still with me? Hope so, because I have taken my love of polymer clay, Christmas ornaments, and crafting in a new direction.
First of all, to be totally honest with you, I need a new income source that I can do from home.My son suggested doing video tutorials where I show myself actually making the ornaments.
The polymer clay videos have detailed instructions with captions and narration. PDF worksheets come with each video. I have created over 1000 designs in the past 45 years. Most of them are winners, but some go in the good, bad and the ugly pile. Like the salt dough Santa heads with the burned beard. But someone loved them and bought the whole lot!
